Bilstain est une section de la ville belge de Limbourg, située actuellement en Région wallonne dans la province de Liège.
Le nom Bilisten désignant le village actuel est cité pour la première fois en 1125. Ce nom signifie roche en saillie . Il est possible que ce nom se réfère au promontoire rocheux non loin duquel se trouve le village. Ce bois fut donné par Thiebaut de Foran pour le salut de son âme à l'église Saint-Jacques-en-Ile de Liège à proximité de laquelle il est enterré. Le bois, devenu propriété de l'abbaye Saint-Jacques, acquit de cette manière son nom actuel.
