Située sur la côte belge de la mer du Nord et construite autour du port d'Ostende, elle est devenue une station balnéaire renommée, parfois appelée la « reine des plages » ou la « ville belge la plus britannique » en raison du nombre important de touristes britanniques qui la fréquentent depuis longtemps. James Joyce, notamment, a déclaré avoir passé ses meilleures vacances d'été à Ostende. Mais Ostende est aussi populaire avec les touristes non-britanniques.
