L’église Saint-Ursmer de Lobbes peut être considérée comme la plus ancienne église de Wallonie.
La nef et les deux transepts au moins appartiennent, en effet, à l’époque carolingienne.
Dès la fin du XIe siècle ou, selon une étude récente, dès la fin du Xe siècle période durant laquelle fut installé un chapitre de chanoines, l’église fut modifiée, notamment par l’agrandissement du choeur et par le remaniement de la vaste crypte semienterrée toujours conservée.
