Après avoir résisté pendant deux jours près de Groot-Oosterzele, l'armée belge se retira vers la Lys et le canal de drainage le mercredi 22 mai 1940. En conséquence, Groot-Oosterzele tomba sous le contrôle de l'occupant allemand. Un certain nombre de régiments allemands se rassemblèrent ici à Landskouter pour marcher ensuite en direction de Vurste.
