Después de resistir durante dos días en las cercanías de Groot-Oosterzele, el ejército belga se retiró hacia el Leie y el canal de drenaje el miércoles 22 de mayo de 1940. Como resultado, Groot-Oosterzele quedó bajo el control del ocupante alemán. Varios regimientos alemanes se llevaron a cabo aquí en Landskouter para marchar desde allí hacia Vurste.
