Nadat ze twee dagen weerstand boden in de buurt van Groot-Oosterzele trok op woensdag 22 mei 1940 het Belgische leger zich terug naar de Leie en het afwateringskanaal. Bijgevolg kwam Groot-Oosterzele onder het gezag van de Duitse bezetter. Een aantal Duitse regimenten verzamelden hier te Landskouter om van daaruit richting Vurste te marcheren.
Op de foto zie je Duitse soldaten ter hoogte van de huidige Aalmoezenijestraat in Landskouter. Op de achtergrond is een brandende woning te zien.
