Ferdinand Verbiest est né en 1623 à Pittem et a mené une vie exceptionnelle en tant que missionnaire jésuite en Chine, astronome et ingénieur. Il est même crédité comme l'inventeur de la première automobile ! Sa soif de connaissances était insatiable. Il a étudié les humanités à Bruges et à Courtrai, la philosophie à Louvain et la théologie à Rome et Séville.
Plus tard, il a construit un aqueduc, conçu un nouveau chariot de canon, fabriqué 300 canons de différents types pour l'armée impériale et a même conçu ce qui est décrit comme le premier véhicule fonctionnant à la vapeur. Mesurant environ 60 cm de long, il était trop petit pour transporter un passager humain. C'était tout de même une invention remarquable.
