Au 13ème siècle, un château se tenait ici, servant de résidence d'été pour les abbés de l'abbaye Saint-Bavon de Gand. L'évêque-prince tchèque Ferdinand von Lobkowitz y ajouta à la fin du 18ème siècle des écuries, deux orangeries et une précieuse collection de plantes exotiques. Charles Vuylsteke transforma le château en entreprise de horticulture autour de 1870, donnant ainsi le coup d'envoi à la culture des azalées et des bégonias à Lochristi. Le château et le parc ne peuvent être visités qu'en groupe.
