Comme son nom l'indique, il y avait autrefois un bac qui traversait la Leie. Vers 1825, le bac a fait place à un pont en bois, qui a été remplacé en 1900 par un pont en ardoise et fer. L'actuel pont en arc en béton (1927) est, avec l'Ancienne Abbaye, dont l'histoire remonte au 7ème siècle, un monument protégé. Au niveau du Pontbrug se trouve l'Ancien Puits de la Leie, le point le plus septentrional de l'Ancienne Leie.
