Zoals de naam doet vermoeden, was er hier vroeger een veerpont dat de Leie overstak. Omstreeks 1825 ruimde het veer plaats voor een houten brug, die in 1900 vervangen werd door een brug in arduin en ijzer. De huidige betonnen boogbrug (1927) is samen met de Oude Abdij, waarvan de geschiedenis teruggaat tot de 7de eeuw, een beschermd monument. Ter hoogte van de Pontbrug ligt de Oude Leieput, het meest noordelijke uiteinde van de Oude Leie.
