Le curieux nom 'Ninglinspo' est le résultat d’une faute d’orthographe des cartographes français qui ont déformé pas mal de noms de lieux dans le 'département de l’Ourthe' qui a été créé ici en 1876. Ils ont échangé le nom du ruisseau avec le nom du morceau de terre où le ruisseau se jette dans l’Amblève. Ce terrain s’appelait : « En Inglin spau », c’est-à-dire à la source d’Inglin, nom de la personne dont la trace a été perdue. Le nom original du ruisseau est en fait 'Le Doulneux' (en latin: Dulnosus) ce qui montre qu’il provient d’une forêt d’aulnes. Dans la charte de 'Sigebert III' de 647, ce nom est déjà mentionné.
