La bataille de la Lys est la plus importante bataille de l’armée belge en 1940 pendant la campagne des 18 jours. Elle avait pour enjeu d'interdire le franchissement de la Lys par l'armée allemande et dura du 23 au 28 mai 1940, alors que les troupes britanniques abandonnaient à la droite de l'armée belge pour rembarquer à Dunkerque sans que rien soit prévu pour sauver une partie des troupes belges. L'issue fatale de la bataille fut la reddition belge du 28 mai.
