Construit en 1627 comme point de soutien militaire espagnol après la fin de la Douze Ans de trêve entre les catholiques espagnols et les protestants néerlandais. En tant que fort situé le plus au nord de la ligne Fontaineline, le Fort Saint-Paul sert de première défense contre les incursions via les lagunes autour de la Zwingeul. Après le traité de Münster, le fort a été évacué en 1650. Lors de conflits et de différends frontaliers ultérieurs, il a été utilisé et restauré à plusieurs reprises. Il reste encore la digue principale en terre et le fossé. Protégé en tant que monument depuis 2004.
