Les collines de Hageland constituent une zone naturelle importante dans le paysage régional du Noord-Hageland. L'autoroute E314 traverse cette région et forme une barrière pour la plupart des animaux. Des murs anti-bruit, des séparations de route en béton et une forte pression de circulation entravent la migration entre Beninksberg et Wijgaardberg.
Ce tunnel écologique est ouvert depuis mars 2007 et depuis, moins d'animaux meurent sur la route. De plus, l'échange de matériel génétique permet de créer des populations plus fortes et plus saines. Et la biodiversité augmentera progressivement !
