Deux cents ans avant que les champs de la Westhoek soient semés de cadavres, ces terres ont été le théâtre de la 'Bataille d'Audenarde', une issue tragique d'une question de succession au trône. Huit ans après la mort sans héritier du roi espagnol, son empire menaçait de tomber aux mains du petit-fils du roi français Louis XIV. 80 000 soldats alliés se sont rassemblés ici pour convaincre 95 000 Français de changer d'avis. Au cours de la bataille, il y eut 6 000 morts et 7 000 blessés. Pour les commémorer, cette chapelle solitaire pour officiers, à l'extrémité nord du champ de bataille, a été construite.
