Doscientos años antes de que los campos de Westhoek se sembraran de cadáveres, estos campos fueron el escenario de la 'Batalla de Oudenaarde', una trágica resolución de una cuestión de sucesión al trono. Ocho años después de que el rey español muriera sin un sucesor, su reino amenazaba con caer en manos del nieto del rey francés Luis XIV. 80,000 soldados aliados se reunieron aquí para cambiar la opinión de 95,000 franceses. En la batalla hubo 6,000 muertos y 7,000 heridos. Para conmemorarles se construyó esta solitaria capilla de oficiales, en el extremo norte del campo de batalla.
