Duecento anni prima che i campi del Westhoek fossero cosparsi di cadaveri, queste terre furono il palcoscenico della 'Battaglia di Oudenaarde', un tragico epilogo di una questione di successione al trono. Otto anni dopo la morte del re spagnolo senza successore, il suo impero minacciava di cadere nelle mani del nipote del re francese Luigi XIV. Qui si radunarono 80.000 soldati alleati per convincere 95.000 francesi a cambiare idea. Nella battaglia ci furono 6.000 morti e 7.000 feriti. Per ricordarli fu costruita questa solitaria cappella per ufficiali, situata al estremo nord del campo di battaglia.
