Le Postelvaartje a été creusé en novembre 1922 pour transporter les produits de Postel vers le canal de Kempen. C'était une initiative de Charles de Broqueville. Plus tard, il a également servi de canal d'irrigation pour les exploitations agricoles à Postel. L'eau riche en calcaire atteignait le domaine du prince Charles, frère du roi Léopold III. D'où le nom de la mare royale de 2,5 hectares et d'un étang de 1 hectare, désormais propriété de l'abbaye. Des ouvriers assidus de Retie ont réalisé en 1945 la connexion avec un complexe d'écluses entre le Postelvaartje et les terrains de l'abbaye. Et ce sous l'encouragement de genièvre et de chocolat. Le Postelvaartje a finalement été classé en 1977 comme cours d'eau provincial. Depuis lors, le nettoyage est régulièrement assuré par les services provinciaux.
