Lors du 'Lundi Volant' (Vliegende Maandag), des milliers de réfugiés passèrent par le village, accompagnés de rumeurs sur les Allemands approchant. Ensuite, Oekene fut visité par des soldats britanniques et français, avant que les Allemands n'occupent le village.

Jusqu'au lundi 24 août, la guerre n'était, pour les habitants d'Oekene, que dans les journaux. Dans le courant de cette journée, des milliers de réfugiés belges affluèrent tout à coup du centre du pays. Cela dura finalement encore environ deux mois avant que les Allemands n'occupent vraiment Oekene.
