L'Université de Liège conserve quelque 50 000 œuvres visibles lors d'expositions permanentes et temporaires : peintures, estampes, dessins, photographies, monnaies, médailles, collection ethnographique...
La constitution de cette collection remonte à la fondation de l'institution par le roi Guillaume Ier des Pays-Bas. L'apport majeur intervient en 1903, lorsque le baron Adrien Wittert lègue à l'Etat belge, pour l'Université de Liège, sa collection d'estampes, sa bibliothèque et une cinquantaine de tableaux anciens. Ensuite les Collections artistiques se sont régulièrement enrichies grâce à de nombreux donateurs.
