Ceux qui parlent de réchauffement parlent de glace qui fond. Les glaciers en sont le témoin le plus frappant. En deux ans (2022 et 2023), ils ont perdu 10 % de leur volume dans les Alpes. Selon le pire scénario climatique, ils auraient totalement disparu d'ici la fin du siècle.
L'eau fondue se retrouve dans la mer où elle fait monter le niveau de la mer. Celui-ci augmente en moyenne de 4,4 mm par an dans le monde. Sur la côte belge, l'eau monte ici à Ostende de 6 mm par an.
Pour un impact drastique à long terme, nous devons regarder vers le Groenland et l'Antarctique.
Si toute leur glace venait à fondre, le niveau de la mer augmenterait globalement de 67 mètres.
