Wie opwarming zegt, zegt smeltend ijs. De gletsjers zijn daar de meest schrijnende getuige van. In twee jaar (2022 en 2023) hebben ze in de Alpen 10 procent van hun volume verloren. Ze zouden tegen het einde van de eeuw helemaal verdwenen zijn, in het slechtste klimaatscenario.
Gesmolten water belandt in zee waar het de zeespiegel doet stijgen. Die komt nu gemiddeld wereldwijd 4,4 mm hoger per jaar. Aan de Belgische kust stijgt het water hier in Oostende 6 mm per jaar.
Voor een drastische impact op lange termijn moeten we naar Groenland en Antarctica kij
ken. Mocht al hun ijs smelten, zou het zeeniveau globaal met 67 meter stijgen.
