Au centre de Herne, le clocher de l’église construit en blocs de pierre massifs attire l’attention. C’est l’église Saint-Pierre-et-Paul. Le bâtiment actuel a une nef et une nef de style roman, ainsi qu’un chœur et une tour exécutés en gothique brabançon de l’Escaut. Typiques de ce style sont les quatre tourelles d’angle autour de la flèche. L’âge de la municipalité est remarquable: Herne est mentionné pour la première fois comme « Herinium » en 844 et signifie probablement « établissement par la pierre ».
