Dans les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts, il y a "Bruxelles le matin" de Joseph Stevens, datant de 1848. La Belgique n'avait pas encore deux décennies, mais c'était déjà la misère. De nombreuses calamités avaient frappé le pays, et partout des mendiants, des vagabonds et des bandes de voleurs étaient présents. Le tableau représente une meute de chiens émaciés et des sans-abri dans la première lumière du jour. L'endroit où cette image a été observée par Joseph Stevens se trouvait dans le quartier européen, qui, à l'époque, était une zone de pauvreté et de souffrance.
