L'église des Dunes était si proche d'Ensor qu'il souhaitait y être enterré. L'artiste qui s'était souvent moqué de l'Église catholique et qui n'assistait à aucun service religieux avait conclu de son vivant un accord avec la paroisse. En échange d'une place de sépulture, il accepterait un service liturgique. À la fin de sa vie, le peintre était un citoyen si célèbre que l'église et la ville étaient ravies d'organiser une cérémonie officielle avec une résonance. Ensor a trouvé sa tombe en 1949. Ostende a ainsi gagné un lieu touristique et l'église a depuis lors un nom officieux supplémentaire, l'église d'Ensor.
