Hellegat est un hameau qui a été créé en 1900 près de l'ancien bac de Hellegat. Le bac, qui reliait Hellegat à Ruisbroek, est resté opérationnel jusqu'en 1944. Les travailleurs des briqueteries sur les rives de la Rupel vivaient dans de petites maisons et des rues entre les fours à briques et les séchoirs. Beaucoup de ces logements peuvent encore être retrouvés aujourd'hui dans le paysage urbain.
