En face du coin sud-ouest de la forêt de Polygoon se dresse une impressionnante statue en bronze d'un Highlander, un soldat écossais. Elle se trouve presque au même endroit où s'est terminée la première bataille d'Ypres les 10 et 11 novembre 1914. À ce 'Black Watch Corner', les Britanniques et les Français empêchèrent les Allemands de percer vers Ypres. Les deux camps s'enterrèrent sur la crête. Le monument rend non seulement un hommage permanent à la détermination du légendaire régiment Black Watch, mais rappelle également la détermination des 'Old Contemptibles' britanniques - le terme de dérision allemand pour l'armée professionnelle britannique. Le régiment a perdu plus de huit mille soldats sur le front occidental.
