Frente a la esquina suroeste del Bosque Polygon se encuentra una impresionante estatua de bronce de un Highlander, un soldado escocés. Se erige casi en el mismo lugar donde terminó la primera Batalla de Ypres el 10 y 11 de noviembre de 1914. En este 'Rincón de la Black Watch', los británicos y franceses impidieron que los alemanes cruzaran hacia Ypres. Ambos bandos se atrincheraron en la cresta. El monumento no solo rinde un tributo permanente a la firmeza del legendario Regimiento Black Watch, sino que también recuerda la determinación de los 'Old Contemptibles' británicos - el nombre despectivo alemán para el ejército profesional británico. El regimiento perdió más de ocho mil soldados en el frente occidental.
