Tegenover de zuidwestelijke hoek van het Polygoonbos staat een indrukwekkend bronzen beeld van een Highlander, een Schotse soldaat. Het staat op nagenoeg dezelfde plaats waar op 10 en 11 november 1914 de eerste Slag om Ieper eindigde. Aan deze 'Black Watch Corner' voorkwamen Britten en Fransen dat de Duitsers de doorsteek maakten naar Ieper. Beide partijen groeven zich in op de heuvelkam. Het monument brengt niet alleen een permanent eerbetoon aan de standvastigheid van het legendarische Black Watch Regiment, maar herinnert ook aan de vastberadenheid van de Britse 'Old Contemptibles' - de Duitse spotnaam voor het Britse beroepsleger. Het regiment verloor op het westelijke front meer dan achtduizend soldaten.
