Le château-fort d'Écaussinnes est un joyaux médiéval. Il occupait une position stratégique à la hauteur d'un gué sur la Sennette, qui séparait le Comté du Hainaut et le Duché du Brabant. Il fut construit au XIIème siècle sur un éperon rocheux de formation calcaire de Lalaing (LAL). Comme nous pouvons l’observer sur la photo, ce calcaire a une structure schisteuse, est argileux et riche en fossiles.
