Elle se trouve au confluent de l'Amblève et de l'Eau rouge, en Ardenne belge. Elle fut longtemps, par son abbaye, le chef lieu d'une petite principauté abbatiale qui disparut dans les changements politiques qui suivirent la Révolution française. Elle compte au 1er décembre 2019, 7 160 habitants, 3 591 hommes et 3 569 femmes, pour une superficie de 85,07 km², soit une densité de 84,17 habitants au km².
