Le théâtre romain de Plovdiv a été construit au IIe siècle, sous le règne de Trajan, au centre de la ville romaine de Philippopolis, renommée Trimontium, en Thrace, aujourd'hui Plovdiv, en Bulgarie. Il est entouré de nombreux vestiges antiques, romains pour la plupart.
Les premières traces de civilisation à cet endroit remontent à la période mycénienne. Plovdiv était alors une ville fortifiée thrace appelée Eumolpias. Elle fut conquise en 342 av. J.-C. par Philippe II de Macédoine, père d'Alexandre le Grand, qui la renomma Philippopolis. Plus tard, elle devint indépendante dans le cadre des royaumes thraces, jusqu'à son intégration à l'Empire romain, sous lequel elle fut appelée Trimontium . Elle devint alors la capitale de la province de Thrace . Trimontium était un carrefour important dans l'Empire romain.
