Le parc national de Banff est situé dans les montagnes Rocheuses canadiennes, à 120 km à l'ouest de la ville de Calgary, dans la province de l'Alberta. Sa date de création, 1885, en fait le plus ancien parc national canadien. Il est également inscrit depuis 1985 au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO avec les autres parcs des montagnes Rocheuses canadiennes.
Ses 6 641 km2 de terrains montagneux comprennent de nombreux glaciers et champs de glace , des zones de forêts denses de résineux, et des paysages de type alpin. Le parc est prolongé au nord par le parc national de Jasper. À l'ouest s'étendent le parc national de Yoho, le parc national de Kootenay. La seule localité importante du parc est Banff, où se situe le centre d'information.
