Dürnten a une superficie de 10,2 km2. De cette superficie, 60,4% est utilisée à des fins agricoles, tandis que 17% est boisée. Sur le reste des terres, 21,4% sont colonisées et le reste est non productif. En 1996, les logements et les bâtiments représentaient 13,9 % de la superficie totale, tandis que les infrastructures de transport constituaient le reste. Sur la superficie totale improductive, l’eau représentait 0,8% de la superficie. En 2007, 15,4 % de la superficie municipale totale faisait l’objet d’un type ou d’un autre de construction.
La rivière Jona traverse la municipalité. Il est situé sur le versant sud-ouest de la montagne Bachtel. Il comprend les villages de Dürnten, Oberdürnten et Tann.
