Le demi-canton de Bâle-Ville n'existe que depuis 1833. Auparavant, et lors de son entrée dans la Confédération en 1501, il faisait partie avec Bâle-Campagne du canton de Bâle.
Le canton de Bâle-Ville compte 185 227 habitants en 2007, soit 2,4 % de la population totale de la Suisse ; parmi eux, 56 106 sont étrangers. La densité de population atteint 5 000 habitants au km2, la plus forte densité d'un canton en Suisse.
