Le premier tunnel du Saint-Gothard, tunnel ferroviaire à double voie de 15 km de long, fut construit de 1872 à 1881, mille mètres plus bas que le col alpin du même nom, qui culmine à 2 108 m. Il relie Göschenen au nord, dans le canton d'Uri à Airolo dans le canton du Tessin.
L'entrée nord est à 1 106 m d'altitude, le point culminant à 1 151 m et la sortie à 1 142 m. Les trains parcourent le tunnel en 11 minutes.
Le 11 décembre 2016, un nouveau tunnel ferroviaire, le tunnel de base du Saint-Gothard, a été mis en service après dix-sept ans de travaux. Avec ses 57 km, il est le tunnel le plus long du monde.
