Autour de la Marktplatz, couverte de pavés, et dans la Tidexerstraße se dressent de remarquables maisons à colombages gothiques et Renaissance. Deux bâtiments marquants de la place sont dédiés au célèbre gredin de la ville, Tijl Uilenspiegel. Selon la légende, il travailla dans une brasserie - comment aurait-il pu en être autrement? - et le compositeur Richard Strauss mit ses exploits en musique dans le poème symphonique Till Eulenspiegel.
