C'est ici, au château de Saaleck, que Kern et Fischer ont trouvé refuge après avoir assassiné le politicien Walter Rathenau à Berlin. Un sympathisant de droite, Wilhelm Stein, qui possédait le château, leur a permis de se cacher ici.
La police a réussi à les trouver ici car elle avait vu des lumières allumées dans le château qui était censé être abandonné. Kern est abattu par la police. Fischer se suicide ensuite au même endroit.
