Le complexe du château d’origine a été mentionné pour la première fois en 1095 et était probablement situé sur le site de l’actuelle tour romaine. Le château appartenait aux comtes de Wiesneck et est entré en possession des comtes de Hohenberg dans la seconde moitié du 12e siècle. Ils ont construit un nouveau complexe de château supplémentaire sur le site du château actuel. En 1381, l’ensemble du comté, y compris Haigerloch, passa aux Habsbourg. En 1497, elle fut échangée entre les mains du comte Eitel Frédéric II de Zollern en échange de la seigneurie de Rhäzüns en Suisse.
