Mihla se situe dans une petite vallée de la Werra, sur une hauteur au-dessus de la boucle. Mihla s'étend à l'ouest du Hainich, là où coule la Lauterbach. La Lempertsbach passe au sud du territoire de la commune.
Mihla est mentionné pour la première fois entre 780 et 802 dans un document de l'abbaye de Fulda, ce qui en fait l'une des premières colonisations de la Thuringe. L'ancienne église locale apparaît comme une paroisse mère de la région au moment de la christianisation, d'abord sous l'autorité de l'abbaye de Hersfeld puis de Fulda.
