La commune réunit depuis 1974 les quartiers d'Affegünt, Bremsdieck, Dallacker, Düttnis, Gunneby, Hestoft, Kius, Knappersfeld, Ulsnis, Ulsniskirchenholz et Ulsnisland.
La première mention écrite d'Ulsnis date de 1349 sous le nom de "Vlfsnees" . Les villages d'Ulsnis, Hestoft, Kius sont cités en 1509 comme propriété de l'évêque de Schleswig acheté au domaine de Hesselgaard. L'évêché est dissous en 1770, Ulsnis est rattaché à un hundred adjacent. Ce hundred disparait en 1889 après le rattachement du Schleswig-Holstein à la Prusse en 1866.
