Bredeney est un quartier sud de la ville d'Essen. Les quartiers adjacents sont au sud Fischlaken et Werden, à l'ouest Schuir et Haarzopf, au nord Margarethenhöhe, Rüttenscheid et Stadtwald, ainsi qu'à l'est Heisingen.
La première mention de Bredeney se trouve à l'occasion de l'inauguration d'une église à Werden le 10 novembre 875. En 1036, l'abbé Gerold fit construire une chapelle à Bredeney en l'honneur de la très sainte Trinité. Adolf von der Mark construisit en 1226 la maison Baldeney, aujourd'hui connue sous le nom de Château Baldeney.
