Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la ville a été en grande partie détruite par les bombardements alliés, mais après la guerre, Münster a été reconstruite dans son ancien style. Il en a été de même pour la cathédrale ou Dom de Münster qui a été ciblée. Dans son livre La Mafia des bombardiers, l'auteur Malcolm Gladwell en parle davantage. 'Lorsque les Britanniques voulaient frapper l'industrie de guerre allemande, ils pensaient qu'il était normal de "déloger" également les travailleurs allemands. Ainsi, la population civile est devenue une cible légitime.' Cependant, il n'y avait même pas d'industrie de guerre à Münster. La cible était cette Dom. Et cela un dimanche matin, quand les gens assistaient à la messe.
