La prison de Werl, située au nord de la ville, est l'une des plus grandes prisons d'Allemagne.
Le complexe couvre une superficie d'environ 10 hectares et accueille actuellement 866 adultes, détenus masculins. En 2007, une extension de 3 hectares supplémentaires a été commencée.
Après la pose de la première pierre en 1906, le bâtiment a été mis en service le 1er juillet 1908 en tant que prison centrale du royaume de Prusse. C'était la plus grande prison du Reich allemand.
