Il carcere di Werl, situato a nord della città, è uno dei più grandi carceri della Germania.
Il complesso copre un'area di circa 10 ettari e attualmente ospita 866 detenuti adulti di sesso maschile. Nel 2007 sono iniziati i lavori per l'espansione di ulteriori 3 ettari.
Dopo la posa della prima pietra nel 1906, l'edificio è stato inaugurato il 1° luglio 1908 come carcere centrale del Regno di Prussia. Era il carcere più grande del Reich tedesco.
