Fængslet i Werl, der ligger nord for byen, er et af de største fængsler i Tyskland.
Komplekset dækker et areal på cirka 10 hektar og rummer i øjeblikket 866 voksne, mandlige indsatte. I 2007 begyndte man en udvidelse af yderligere 3 hektar.
Efter grundstenen blev lagt i 1906, blev bygningen taget i brug den 1. juli 1908 som centralfængsel for kongeriget Preussen. Det var det største fængsel i det Tyske Rige.
