La structure de verrouillage de Wischhafen près de Wischhafen sépare la Süderelbe de Wischhafen de l'Elbe en tant qu'ouvrage transversal. Elle fait partie d'un concept de protection contre les inondations sur l'Unterelbe, influencé par les marées, depuis la zone de retenue de Geesthacht jusqu'à l'embouchure du fleuve dans la mer du Nord, qui a été développé à la suite de la violente tempête de février 1962. Elle se trouve à environ 500 m en amont du quai du ferry de l'Elbe Glückstadt–Wischhafen.
