Hohenzollern-Hechingen était d'abord un comté à partir de 1576 et, de 1623 à 1850, un principauté avec la ville résidentielle de Hechingen. Avant le comté de Hohenzollern-Hechingen, le comté (Hohen)Zollern existait. La région représente les terres ancestrales des Hohenzollern. Hohenzollern-Hechingen est resté territorialement largement inchangé depuis 1576. En tant que dernier prince de Hohenzollern-Hechingen, Constantin a démissionné de ses fonctions gouvernementales en 1849. La prise de possession par la Prusse a eu lieu en 1850. Il existait également parallèlement le principauté de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.
