L'aérodrome peut se vanter d'une longue histoire. Il a été établi dans les années 1930 par la Weser-Flugzeugbau GmbH. L'usine voisine Weserflug à Lemwerder est devenue en 1961 un site d'assemblage final de VFW, qui a notamment construit les VFW 614 et Transall C-160 dans les années 1960 et 1970. VFW est devenu une partie de Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, qui a ensuite fusionné dans la DASA, qui est finalement devenue une partie du groupe aéronautique et spatial EADS.
