La gare de Hattingen est une gare de la ville de Hattingen. Elle comprend également la halte Hattingen Mitte. Cette dernière est cependant le point d'accès le plus important au transport ferroviaire régional, car elle est immédiatement adjacente à la vieille ville de Hattingen et à la gare routière.
La gare est située sur le tronçon Dahlhausen – Henrichshütte de la ligne de chemin de fer Mittlere Ruhrtalbahn, qui a été inaugurée le 28 décembre 1869 et construite par la Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. En 1874, la ligne a été prolongée de Henrichshütte à Hagen. En 1884, la ligne qui bifurque ici vers Wuppertal a été mise en service.
